About two weeks ago, Netflix released yet another original flick titled The Union. In my review of that film, I mentioned that it exemplified the worst characteristics often associated with the term “Netflix flick,” which carries a rather negative connotation, at least in the online world. This problem isn’t exclusive …
“Nature has a way of showing you who you really are.” It’s a simple truth, if a little on the nose for a survival horror film that pits people against nature with bloody consequences, but it’s still true. It’s also a fair way to describe director Adam MacDonald’s latest film, …
“The most detestable habit in all modern cinema is the homage. I don’t want to see another goddamn homage in anybody’s movie. There are enough of them when you’re unconscious.” – Orson Welles, 1982 Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus is a competently made movie. It has some of the most stunning cinematography …
At this point in my life, I’ve seen so many horror films and series that nothing surprises me. There are so many horror films on the scene nowadays, and the twists they attempt to present can be boiled down to the basics of storytelling. They become predictable, which isn’t necessarily …
Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice screened out of competition at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2024. There are few directors in which can truly be accredited with the title of ‘auteur’, but Tim Burton, with his affinity for the macabre, can be called just that. Over a …
Strange Darling is a strange film indeed. I was advised by a colleague of mine to go into my viewing as blind as possible. That’s something I’m rarely able to accomplish with the nature of my job demanding a strong knowledge of upcoming releases and my curious nature leading me …
Horror is one genre that the Indian film industry has struggled with. However, in 2018, audiences got to have a unique experience with Amar Kaushik’s Stree. It was a perfect blend of horror and comedy. Even after being touted as a horror-comedy, it had a pretty story to tell and …
Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece Alien was a tremendous achievement; A low-fi monolith of science-fiction horror that changed the landscape of film as we know it. From Ridley Scott’s lean and elegant direction to HR Giger’s phallic and genitalia-inspired character and set design, one which now feels fused into the very …
It’s a shame when one of your most anticipated films of the year winds up also being one of the biggest disappointments. Unfortunately, that was my experience with Alien: Romulus, the highly anticipated return to the horrors of space from Fede Álvarez. Álvarez has made a name for himself within …
For fans of horror films, at times, it feels like the classic monster tropes are done to death. Made famous in Hollywood thanks to the classic Universal films, vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein’s monster, and The Mummy have been produced and reproduced by almost every studio. You would think that over the …
Not since 1999’s The Blair Witch Project has a horror campaign been quite as effective as the one Neon have instigated for Oswald Perkins’ horror Longlegs. The campaign that tore the internet apart at the turn of the millennium was based on the idea that the titular Blair Witch was …
In 2022, audiences were introduced to the world of the X trilogy with X and its prequel Pearl, both of which were produced and filmed at a record time and managed to come out in the same year. Only two years later, the working relationship between A24, director Ti West, …
M. Night Shyamalan’s career is one of the most divisive I’ve seen in the past few decades. While he directed earlier films, such as Praying with Anger and Wide Awake, his horror film The Sixth Sense put him on the map with a twist that people still talk about today. …
Producer Kayla Foster introduced Your Monster at the Sundance London Film Festival, describing it as a romantic-comedy horror. While this may seem like an unusual combination of genres, this is truly the best way to define what the film is and what makes it utterly unique. Combining elements of the …
For cinephiles like me, the vast majority of films watched throughout the year don’t need specific reasons to “convince” me to visit the theater or turn on the TV on one of the streaming channels. That said, there’s always a standout element in the movie to be watched that raises …
Tiger Stripes can be described as Carrie meets Turning Red, which unfairly minimizes the courageous central performance from young Zafreen Zairzal. But even with a fresh setting – an all-girls’ middle school in the Malaysian jungle – there’s regrettably no freshness in the plot. That makes this only a frustrating …
If there is a more reliable setup for a thriller these days than “young woman trapped in a place with a man,” I don’t know what it is. It’s incredibly versatile, whether you start out with the man being sweet and progressing to darker places, or have him be malevolent …
Horror is one of the most difficult genres to tap into. It’s really challenging to keep viewers at the edge of their seats with genuinely scary elements. However, every once in a while, we get to see a movie that truly captures the essence of the genre and takes us …
2022’s Venice Film Festival opened with the Noah Baumbach directed White Noise, a quirky and chaotic genre-mash up. It is a visually enrapturing film about a family surviving a toxic event while grappling with the feeling of impending doom and the mundane cataclysm of their lives. Adapted from Don DeLillo’s …
I firmly believe that horror based on reality is always scarier than any supernatural horror film. Sure, don’t get me wrong, revengeful spirits and terrifying monsters make for some good thrills and chills, but at the end of the day, I can easily write them off as fiction. Instead, watching …
