Barbenheimer dominated the box office in 2023, but the 81st Golden Globe Awards were all about Oppenheimer winning in almost all the major categories. Christopher Nolan’s biographical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer took home five trophies, including Best Picture.
Nolan won his first-ever Best Director accolade for Oppenheimer, while Cillian Murphy took home the Best Actor (Drama) award for the aforementioned film. Yorgos Lanthimos’ weirdly entertaining Poor Things emerged victorious in multiple categories and also won the Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), while Anatomy of a Fall emerged victorious in the Non-English-Language motion picture. On the other hand, The Boy and the Heron became the first Studio Ghibli film to win the Best Animated Feature at the Globes.
In the leading acting categories, Murphy won Best Actor (Drama), and Lily Gladstone took home the Best Actress (Drama) award for impeccable acting in Killers of the Flower Moon. Gladstone created history with her win and became the first indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress. Meanwhile, Emma Stone and Paul Giamatti won Best Actors (Male & Female) for Poor Things and The Holdovers, respectively. As far as Supporting categories at the Golden Globe Awards are concerned, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Robert Downey Jr. won for their respective roles in The Holdovers and Oppenheimer.
Succession was the biggest winner in the TV category and won four awards, including Best TV Series (Drama). On the other hand, The Bear (with Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edibiri) and Beef also won in multiple categories.
