The Oscars are coming. At least the nominations are, that is. On Tuesday, January 23, at 8:30 AM Eastern time, the 96th Annual Academy Awards nominees will be announced live on ABC’s Good Morning America. Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid are announcing, and we at Movies We Texted About hope that Quaid brings a little bit of Bradward Boimler to the announcements. Although, given all the campaigning behind the scenes and the chatter about who is in or who is out based on the various award shows (seriously, Andrew Scott and Lily Gladstone were snubbed by the BAFTAs!), it will probably be a moment better suited for the more battle-royale-tested Hughie Campbell.
If you are like many people (and all of us millennials on the Movies We Texted About editorialteam), you probably aren’t sitting home waiting with bated breath in front of the television. Have no fear; the Oscars are in the digital age. You can watch the Oscar nominations live at Oscars.org, and all of their other social media platforms. That includes TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, too. Some inventive person on their PR team has probably rigged a carrier pigeon to get the nominations out, too.
Once the Oscar nominations are released, there will be a rather lengthy bit of time until the actual ceremony, where lots of awards campaigning is going on. The final Academy Award voting period is from February 22 through February 27.
In that liminal space between Oscar nominations and until the actual broadcast event, there will also be some official Academy Awards events scheduled. On February 12, there will be an official nominees luncheon. And on February 23, the Sci-tech Oscars are given out.
The 96th Annual Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. Late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the ceremony (again) this year. It’s going to be his fourth time hosting. The Oscars will be, as always, a rather star-studded event. Much to the delight of East Coasters, the 96th Annual Academy Awards will start earlier this year. At 7:00 PM ET (or 4:00 PT for West Coasters), the iconic golden statuettes will begin to be given out.
Counting on the nominees attending the Oscars is a safe bet, but we won’t know who they are until those nomination announcements. You can expect to see some familiar names and movies from other big awards amongst the nominees – the Critics Choice Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAs), and the 81st Annual Golden Globes, to name a few.
