‘Man of Tomorrow’ to Continue James Gunn’s Superman Saga in July 2027

Fans of David Corenswet’s Superman will not have to wait long to see him again. Writer-director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn announced on Instagram that the next chapter in his “Superman Saga”, Man of Tomorrow, is set to fly into theaters on July 9, 2027.

With the reveal came new artwork by DC head Jim Lee. The image features a smiling Superman leaning casually against none other than Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who is decked out in his classic green and purple Warsuit. The design has been a staple of comics and animation for decades, but it will finally make its live-action feature debut.

The art alone immediately raises some interesting questions. Why is Superman holding a screwdriver? And why does he look so friendly next to his arch-nemesis? After the events of Superman, we saw a crying Luthor taken into custody and sent to Belle Reeve. Could the two form an uneasy alliance, or is something else behind Superman’s relaxed demeanor with Lex? I may be overanalyzing the announcement art, but I do love a fan theory or two. And this art, along with any glimpses of the film we get moving forward, are sure to inspire a ton.

Gunn has been teasing the project for weeks, clarifying that while Man of Tomorrow features characters from Superman and continues plot threads from the film, it is not a “direct sequel.” I have no clue what that could mean, given the title comes from a 16-issue Superman run from 1995 to 1999, but I’m excited to find out.

Superman earned over $611 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing comic book movie of the year. It’s an impressive take, given all the chatter about comic book and superhero fatigue. The blockbuster film introduced audiences to DC heroes like Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), alongside Corenswet’s Clark Kent, Hoult’s Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane.

Man of Tomorrow is part of DC Studios’ busy release calendar. Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl arrives June 26, 2026, followed by James Watkins’ horror-focused Clayface on September 11, 2026. Man of Tomorrow will then debut just ahead of Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, slated for October 1, 2027.

While 2027 feels far away, it’s clear that the next chapter of the Superman Saga will be here before we know it.
