The beginning of the MonsterVerse with the 2014 movie Godzilla made viewers realize that the franchise might turn out to be very dark and serious. That’s one of the reasons why the original Godzilla (1954) was so successful and is still considered one of the finest movies of all time. However, the makers soon realized they could have a lot of fun with giant monsters fighting on the big screen. Subsequently, every film released after Gareth Edwards’ initial installment adhered to a straightforward formula, prioritizing exhilarating fun over serious themes. There is a stark difference between Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
Just like the original Japanese franchise, this new series started on a serious note and became lighter with each film passing. There’s no doubt that both movies are brilliant in their own ways. But when it comes to pure adrenaline fun, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is miles ahead of most of its predecessors.
[This is a spoiler-free review of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.]
The story of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
The fifth film in the MonsterVerse starts thirty years after Godzilla and Kong defeated Mechagodzilla. Kong is now living in Hollow Earth, trying to search for a family. On the other hand, Godzilla continues to save humanity from all the colossal threats. Both Titans are fighting their respective enemies. Kong seeks dominance in the Hollow Earth, while Godzilla battles massive monsters and later takes respite in Rome’s Colosseum. However, things change really fast on the Hollow Earth, and Monarch picks up an unidentified signal.
As the story moves forward, viewers learn that Kong is facing another gigantic threat in Hollow Earth. Meanwhile, Godzilla seems to have picked up a distress signal and starts absorbing radiation in several ways. Monarch believes the Kaiju King is preparing for an incoming threat. So, what’s happening? Who is threatening Kong? And who is trying to get Godzilla’s attention? This is basically what happens in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. It’s a straightforward story that doesn’t need a lot of thinking to understand.
Godzilla x Kong’s simple story makes the movie even better
The story written by Simon Barrett, Jeremy Slater, and Terry Rossio, is not complicated, but that’s what makes the movie even better. It strikes a perfect balance between humans and the kaiju. One of the best aspects of the movie is how it portrays the kaiju as real characters, not just mindless monsters, even though they still cause destruction. While simple, the story provides ample opportunities for emotional meaning and growth, enhancing the viewing experience. Also, viewers get to see both Titans in their glories.
As mentioned above, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire puts Godzilla and Kong in the spotlight, relegating human characters to supporting roles. To be honest, this is one of the best decisions taken by the makers because fans flock to the cinema halls for gigantic monsters fighting with each other. So, it doesn’t come as a shock that the makers decided to give monsters all the spotlight. Our monster protagonists have distinctive personalities, and director Adam Wingard has done a magnificent job showing that on the big screen.
Adam Wingard revitalizes the MonsterVerse
Wingard’s direction has undoubtedly revitalized MonsterVerse most extraordinarily. He didn’t shy away from taking components from the original Japanese franchise and infusing them in this film. His keen eye for epic visuals ensures that each battle sequence is a thrilling spectacle, perfectly suited for the big screen.
However, it’s the high-octane entertainment that keeps viewers hooked to their seats. From the first look of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, viewers knew what to expect from the film. However, they didn’t know that the movie would turn out to be such a visual spectacle. The film captivates audiences with its thrilling Titan battles and mind-blowing visuals. The epic fighting scenes between the monsters are jaw-dropping, and one particular sequence in which all the monsters come in one frame is absolutely mind-boggling. While the story may feel pretty ordinary, it never shies away from delivering all the fun and excitement.
Acting-wise, Rebecca Hall, as Dr. Ilene Andrews, is brilliant, while Kaylee Hottle, as Jia, is stupendous. However, it’s Dan Stevens and Brian Tyree Henry who steal the show as Trapper and Bernie. If we get to see another movie in the franchise, makers need to make sure that Stevens and Henry are given prominent roles.
Final thoughts on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
All in all, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the perfect example of pure, unadulterated entertainment. The film is a stark reminder of how audiences can have a lot of fun at the theatres without a lot of complexities. It roars onto the screen with epic battles and breathtaking visual effects, delivering an exhilarating cinematic experience. It’s silly, fun, loud, and undeniably a blockbuster achievement. As the MonsterVerse continues to evolve, Wingard’s vision ensures that the franchise remains relevant and stimulating for years to come.
