‘Furiosa’ is an Electrifying Mad Max Prequel (Review)

In 2015, veteran filmmaker George Miller charmed the world with Mad Max: Fury Road. Many people were skeptical about the movie and felt that Miller might not be able to pull it off. However, he proved everyone wrong and gave us one of the finest movies of this generation. Since then, fans have been waiting for another Mad Max movie. Almost ten years later, Miller finally returns with another Mad Max movie. But this time, the story primarily focuses on the character we saw for the first time in the 2015 flick – Imperator Furiosa. The badass character enthralled us in Fury Road, all thanks to the scintillating acting by Charlize Theron. However, things are really intense now because viewers get a chance to see how a small little girl becomes a savior in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

[There are spoilers ahead for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.]

The story of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Furiosa is very similar to Fury Road when it comes to action. Yet, storywise, it’s very different and is more emotionally charged up. The movie begins with a young Furiosa (played by Alyla Browne) trying to steal an apple from a tree. However, things turn upside down for her when a group of people kidnap her and take her to their master, Dementus (played by Chris Hemsworth). The reason for the abduction is how this little kid is so well-nourished. They want to know where she’s from.

Although her mother, Mary (Charlee Fraser), is able to rescue her from Dementus’ camp, she gets murdered by Dementus while trying to save her daughter. Initially, Dementus takes her in and always keeps her by his side. But his aspirations are bigger, and he wants to be the king of the land. So, he decides to take on Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme). As the story progresses, viewers learn how Furiosa became Imperator Furiosa and how she ended up with Joe.

But it’s much more than just a story about a little girl. Her backstory gives audiences a richer understanding of Furiosa’s struggles, motivations, and evolution from a captive to a formidable leader. Miller takes his time to tell Furiosa’s story, and that’s one of the reasons we can connect with the story so well. For nearly most of the first half, we see a very young version of Furiosa navigating through several challenges, and when she gets older, she becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Themes and Action in Miller’s Furiosa

Furiosa also explores themes such as identity, freedom, and resistance against tyranny. The titular character fights for autonomy and resists oppressive forces, making audiences feel how things are going from bad to worse in the society we live in. As a result, it offers more than just entertainment and comes forward with a thought-provoking narrative. It’s a tale of survival, resilience, and the unyielding spirit that defines Furiosa. Meanwhile, the expansion of the Mad Max universe through the new film adds depth to the existing lore. Fortunately, it makes the franchise even more immersive.

Beyond the spectacular writing, Furiosa is packed with high-octane action that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Although fewer action sequences exist than in Fury Road, the prequel doesn’t disappoint in giving us a heart-thumping action rush. Miller’s signature style of choreographed chaos is evident in car chases, battles, and combat sequences. The scene where villains chase a war rig is absolutely stunning and leaves you gasping for air. These action scenes are not just visually impressive but also crucial to the story, advancing the narrative and developing characters.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in Furiosa

Anya Taylor-Joy is magnificent as young Furiosa and brings a new intensity and vulnerability to the character, making her journey compelling. Anya has given several credible performances in her career, but this is one of her best because she conveys her emotions through facial expressions. She has very little dialogue, but she still impresses with her impeccable acting. She excelled in portraying Furiosa’s emotional intensity. Additionally, the role demanded a strong physical presence, and Taylor-Joy delivered convincingly. All the stunts she performed just tell us about her commitment to the role.

Chris Hemsworth as Dementus is magnificently twisted. Unlike Hemsworth’s other characters, Dementus is layered with motivations and contradictions that the actor skilfully brings to life. He has a magnetic screen presence and demonstrates a wide emotional range in his role. Hemsworth conveyed menace and brutality with precision, as well as moments of vulnerability. It is truly one of his best roles.

Alyla Browne stands out for exceptional performance in this film

However, the film’s standout performer is Alyla Browne, who plays the child version of Furiosa. She is a force to be reckoned with and keeps viewers at the edge of their seats with her magnificent performance. Despite being young, Alyla Browne shows impressive talent and maturity. She makes her performance stand out by believably expressing complex emotions. Browne is undoubtedly brilliant. Visually, the film is breath-taking. George Miller’s direction and Simon Duggan’s cinematography make the viewing experience even better.

Overall, Furiosa is a splendid addition to the Mad Max franchise. Miller has created a prequel that lives up to the standards set by Fury Road. Also, it makes the lore even more enriching. The film delivers an adrenaline-fueled ride through a dystopian landscape with exhilarating action and a powerful narrative. A must-watch!
